Martins TLC is a family business dedicated to producing peat free growing media and working in an environmentally friendly manner. We breed worms feeding them on horse manure and a little shredded cardboard.
Martins TLC Multi-Purpose Compost uses worm casts mixed with coir. It is light compost, allows for good root formation and drainage, and does not crust like peat-based composts if allowed to dry out. It may seem dry on the surface but still be moist so care should be taken not to over water. This is a characteristic of coir. It is excellent for seeds and potting on. It can be used when planting out to help roots establish, for containers and general use. For plants that like a heavier medium add sharp sand and/or loam.
The compost is produced by feeding thousands of worms on horse manure and recycled cardboard. It is rich in humus, which holds the plant foods and water. The nitrogen in the compost tends to be easier for the plants to digest than in some traditional compost. It contains micro-organisms that are beneficial in a healthy soil.
Coir is a coconut fibre collected as a by product in coconut growing areas. It is gathered, dried and sold as an alternative to peat. It is a renewable resource where peat is not. It has excellent moisture retention properties encouraging good root growth. See our Multi-Purpose Compost instruction page for further information.
Martins TLC Worm Casts are a nutritious plant food. They are rich in nutrients. They can be used for indoor plants, in the vegetable beds or in shrub and garden borders. Sprinkle a handful on a pot plant as mulch, or carefully dig in around the top of the pot. In the garden use as a fertilizer to feed the soil for your vegetables or when planting shrubs sprinkle some worm casts when you prepare the soil. They can also be used when making your own potting mix.
Martins TLC Rich Compost is similar to the multi purpose with a higher nutrient content. This is suitable for hungrier plants, available to order.
